He ran for re-election on the newly formed People for Democratic Change (PDC) platform, but was defeated in controversial circumstances. He ran for the same seat again in the 2015 elections and was widely expected to win until, to the public’s surprise, his primary rival was unexpectedly declared the winner, sparking days-long, unplanned, massive protests in the nation’s capital of Enugu.

Chimaroke, Jacob Nwatu, and four private firms were charged on May 26th, 2011 before Justice Benedict Agbata of the Enugu State High Court with 15 new charges relating to alleged misappropriation of state funds and collection of money under false pretenses between August 3rd and November 28th, 2002.

Return to the Senate

Chimaroke rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party from the Enugu State Chapter in 2017. (PDP). When he selected the party’s senatorial nomination form for the Enugu East Senatorial District, he put an end to growing speculation about his political future and focused on the 2019 general elections.

On October 2, 2018, he received 601 votes in the Senate primary election, easily defeating six other candidates, including incumbent Senator Gilbert Nnaji, who received 69 votes. He quickly launched an energetic street-to-street campaign, energizing Enugu City as people flocked to his support. He further cemented his reputation as a crowd-pleaser by taking his campaign to all of the development centers in the senatorial district’s six local government councils, as well as the major marketplaces.

He easily won the subsequent National Assembly elections on February 23, 2019. Nnamani received a total of 128.843 votes, crushing Prince Lawrence. Ozoemeka Ezeh of the APGA received 14,225 votes, while Uchenna Agbo of the PDP received 1,586 votes.

Nnamani has repeatedly attributed his smooth return to the Senate to the strong support he received from his state’s governor, Rt. Hon. Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (aka Gburugburu). On March 14, 2019, he received his certificate of return as a senator-elect from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and he took office on June 11, 2019, following the inauguration of the Federal Republic of Nigeria’s 9th Senate.
