To mitigate the impact of the elimination of fuel subsidies, the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has begun distributing 1,000 conversion kits across several states in the federation.
Speaking at a news conference in Abuja to celebrate the start of the distribution of 1,000 conversion kits throughout certain states, the initiative’s Programme Director, Michael Oluwagbemi, said the move will save transportation expenses.
According to him, the effort will create over 100,000 direct jobs over the next three years, as it seeks to convert over three million automobiles during that time period.
Oluwagbemi said that commercial transport operators will be converted for free in order to mitigate the impact of fuel subsidies by lowering transportation costs.
Also speaking, the PiCN facility’s Warehouse Manager, Moses Onate, revealed to reporters some of the conversation kits in their warehouse in Ibafo, Ogun State, that the distribution is being carried out under the codename ‘First Come First Serve’.
He claimed 450 conversion kits had already been distributed to states, with a further 550 awaiting shipment.
Onate underlined the importance of Nigerians supporting the project, citing its potential to considerably cut the cost of petroleum used to power automobiles.
The conversion kits are intended to allow automobiles to run on compressed natural gas, which is a cleaner and less expensive alternative to gasoline.
