Funke Akindele’s ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ Makes History, Hits N1Billion at Box Office

‘A Tribe Called Judah‘, a family comedy-drama produced by Funke Akindele, has become the first Nollywood movie to hit N1 billion at the Nigerian box office.

The film became the fastest Nigerian film to reach N1 billion in box office earnings in just three weeks.

With profits still being counted, “A Tribe Called Judah” also became the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever. Akindele is now the highest-grossing Nollywood director of all time thanks to the movie.

On Thursday, FilmOne Studios posted a message on their Instagram page announcing the incredible accomplishment.

The movie “shattered records” and “etched its name in the annals of Nollywood glory,” according to the producing firm.

The statement also expressed gratitude to Akindele for her “dedication and passion” in bringing the film to fruition.

“Cinematic history made. A momentous achievement unfolds as #ATribeCalledJudah etches its name in the annals of Nollywood glory,” the statement reads.

“The cinematic masterpiece has not only captured hearts but shattered records becoming the first Nollywood movie to soar past the 1 billion naira milestone at the Box Office.

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ secured the record for the biggest weekend opening in Nollywood after it raked in over N122 million at the box office.

With box office earnings of N400 million within 12 days, the movie set a new standard in Nollywood.

On January 2, it became the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever with a reported N854 million at the box office.

The figure surpassed the record set by previous record-breaking films ‘Battle on Buka Street’ (N668.4 million) and ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga’ (N636.1 million).

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ premiered at cinemas across the country on December 15.

Directed by Adeoluwa Owu, popularly known as Captain Degzy, the movie explores the story of a woman who has five sons from five different men, all belonging to different tribes.

The boys decided to rob a mall with the help of their mother. However, on getting there, they were faced with armed robbers.

The movie featured Akindele, Boma Akpore, Ebele Okaro-Onyiuke, Etinosa Idemudia, Fathia Balogun, Jide Kene Achufusi, Nse Ikpe Etim, and Olayode Juliana.

Other cast members are Olumide Oworu, Paschaline Alex, Timini Egbuson, Tobi Makinde, Uzor Arukwe, Yvonne Jegede, and Genovevah Umeh.
