Jay-Jay was born and raised in Enugu State, a state in Nigeria’s south-east, but his parents are from Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State.

Notably, he got his nickname ‘Jay-Jay’ from his brother, James, who is also a footballer who goes by the moniker Jay Jay. Jay-Jay Okocha also has an elder brother who was a footballer at the time. His given name is Emmanuel, and his nickname is Emma-Jay Jay.
