Ugochukwu Nigerian-born professional footballer John Ogu, a midfielder for the Super Eagles and Israeli team Hapoel Nof HaGalil, was born on April 20, 1988.

Early Life

John Ogu was born on the 20th of April, 1988, in Lagos State, which falls in the South-West geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

Career

Professional Career

Beginning with the Flying Sports Academy, Akwa Starlets, and Akwa United, John Ogu played youth football. On September 23, 2006, when he signed with Drava Ptuj from the Slovenian PrvaLiga, his senior career in Slovenia formally began. During his four-year stint, John Ogu made 97 appearances and scored eight goals.

Ogu changed teams from Primeira Liga to Académica in July 2012. In the third round of the Portuguese Cup against Ponte da Barca, he scored his first goal. Ogu joined Leiria in November 2011, but the squad was demoted to the second division at the end of the campaign.

Ogu and Hapoel Be’er Sheva agreed to a four-year contract in September 2014. Additionally, he scored his first goal for the group in a 4-0 home victory over Maccabi Netanya in November 2015. He participated in the team’s State Championship victory and was a contender for player of the year.

Ogu and Hapoel Be’er Sheva won the Israel Super Cup on August 11, 2016. He scored the game-winning goal against Maccabi Tel Aviv in the championship match on April 29, 2017. Ogu was rated as Israel’s top footballer by 60 sports writers and industry experts.

In January 2020, John Ogu signed a six-month contract to work with Al-Adalah. Before departing the team, he made seven appearances. On February 2, 2022, Ogu went back to Israel and joined the newly promoted team H. Nof HaGalil to finish the campaign. On May 30, 2022, he joined Maccabi Jaffa.

International Career

In March 2013, Ogu was chosen to participate for the Nigerian national team in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier. He replaced an injured Victor Moses in his debut against Kenya during a 1-1 draw. On May 31 at Houston’s Reliant Stadium, Ogu scored his first goal for Nigeria in a friendly game against Mexico. On June 9, Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi selected Ogu as one of 23 players who would represent Nigeria at the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup.

On March 18, John Ogu and 27 other football players were called up for the upcoming friendlies against Bolivia and South Africa.

He was included in Nigeria’s initial 30-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia in May of that year. He was a member of the 23-man team for the 2019 AFCON.
