Meji Alabi is a filmmaker, director, photographer, and producer from Nigeria. He was born in London but chose to relocate to Nigeria to demonstrate his level of creativity and to contribute to the improvement of the content produced. He has directed video content for top entertainers and artists such as Beyonce, Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Popcaan, Goldlink, Koffee, and Nasty C, among others.
Early Life and Education
Meji was born in London on December 13, 1988, and moved around a lot as a toddler with his father after his parents divorced in 1989. He moved back and forth between Texas, the Bahamas, and London. In Houston, Texas, he attended Stratford High School and Spring Forest Middle School. Meji Alabi also has a licensed vocational nursing degree from St. Phillips College in San Antonio, Texas, and a degree in accounting and finance from the University of West London with a first-class summa cum laude distinction.
Career
JM Films was founded in 2014 by Meji Alabi and Jimi Adesanya. JM Films (a subsidiary of Unbound Studios) is a media and production services firm based in Lagos, Nigeria. It specializes in creative visuals, music videos, commercials, movies, and television. He is also a co-founder of Priorgold Pictures, a production company based in Lagos, Nigeria that was founded to meet the needs of the entertainment industry by providing staff and equipment for the creation of imaginative visual content.
In 2014, he directed the music video for Seyi Shay’s song “Murda,” which also featured Patoranking and Shaydee. Because of the popularity of this video, he received a lot of attention in the Nigerian music industry, and it received a nomination for Best Video at the MTV Africa Music Awards the following year. In 2014, he also directed the music video for Seyi Shay and Wizkid’s song “Crazy.” In 2015, that video was nominated for Best Music Video of the Year (Artist and Director) at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards, as well as Best Music Video at The Headies.
In 2016, he began creating music videos for the elite of the Nigerian music industry with the video for Maleek Berry’s song “Kontrol.” He directed the music video for Alikiba’s song “Aje,” which won Best Music Video at the 2017 Soundcity MVP Awards Festival. Meji directed the music video for Davido’s single “Assurance” from his album “A Good Time” in 2018.
Burna Boy has been working on some of Meji Alabi’s projects since 2018. He directed the songs “Pull Up,” “On The Low,” and “Gum Body” from Burna Boy’s album “African Giant,” all of which feature Jorja Smith. Meji also directed the music videos for the album “Twice As Tall” songs “Real Life with Stormzy” and “Way Too Big, Wonderful, Monsters You Made” with Chris Martin.
Meji Alabi directed the music videos for Ginger starring Burna Boy, No Stress, and Smile starring H.E.R., as well as Wizkid’s Made in Lagos album. As the producer in charge of the Nigerian footage, he also worked on the 2020 Black Is King visual project, which was executive produced by Beyonce Knowles-Carter. He also co-directed the Grammy Award-winning music video for “Brown Skin Girl,” which he worked on with Ibra Ake and Jenn Nkiru.
