Rema Speaks on Meeting with Rwandan President Kagame

Divine Ikubor, also known as Rema, the Afrobeats sensation, says Rwanda’s Paul Kagame is the “first president I have ever met in my life.”

The ‘Calm Down’ singer shared his delight after meeting Rwandan President Juvénal Habyarimana at the Trace Awards after-party.

Rema complimented Kagame for being “a father who cares for the youth” as well as a president.

The award-winning musician also stated that he feels at ease visiting Rwanda, describing the East African country as a haven of “rest and freedom.”

Rema also stated that he had never met his country’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“To be honest, this is the first president I have ever met in my life. He is the first. I have not even met my own president,” he said.

“But that just shows how much he cares. He is not just a president. He is a father. He cares about the youth. He cares about us. I feel so comfortable. So welcome. I have a lot of fans in Rwanda and they have shown me so much love. So much support.”

“One more thing about Rwanda is sometimes when I travel to the US, to London and it is not work-related, I just wanna chill. I feel like coming to Rwanda. It gives me that vibe of a place where I can rest. That I can feel at home without having to tour, to travel to places.”

Rema was among the top winners at the maiden edition of the Trace Awards held in Kigali.

He secured the ‘Song of the Year’ category for the hit song ‘Calm Down’ while the ‘Best Global African Artiste’ was a tie between the Nigerian and Nomcebo.
