Tems Sets New Spotify Record for Nigerian Female Artiste

Tems, a Grammy Award winner, has become the Nigerian female artist with the most streaming days on Spotify.

The singer’s debut album, ‘Born In The Wild’, was released on Friday after great anticipation.

Tems generated 5.33 million global streams on the project’s first day. However, in addition to her other work on the streaming platform, the singer has gathered 8.028 million streams, a record for a Nigerian female artist.

The 18-track project, published under RCA Records/Since 93′, featured collaborations with Nigerian singer Asake on ‘Get It Right’ and US rapper J. Cole on ‘Free Fall’.

The album’s earlier singles included ‘Me & U’ and ‘Love Me Jeje’.

Other titles in the project include ‘Born In The Wild’, ‘Special Baby’, ‘Burning’, ‘Wickedest’, ‘Unfortunate’, ‘Ready’, ‘Gangsta,’ ‘Boy o Boy’, ‘Forever’, ‘Voices In My Head’, ‘Turn Me Up’, ‘T-Unit’, ‘You In My Face’, and ‘Hold On’.

‘Born In The Wild’ arrived three years after her last EP ‘If Orange Was a Place’.

Tems, born Temilade Openiyi, rose to prominence in 2020 with her collaboration with Wizkid on the song ‘Essence’. She released her debut EP ‘For Broken Ears’ in the same year.

In February 2023, the singer received her first Grammy. She won the ‘Best Melodic Rap Performance’ award for her role in Future’s 2022 hit song ‘Wait for U’, which features Drake.

In March, the singer received the ‘Breakthrough Award’ at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.
