Mercy Johnson-Okojie, a Nollywood actress, has come under fire on social media for her analysis of the growing prices of critical food goods, which she attributes to the dollar-to-naira exchange rate.
As of November 13, the official market rate between the naira and the dollar is N780 per $.
The actress recently posted a video of herself in the kitchen, engaging her followers in a lighthearted discussion on the rising cost of food.
Mercy also questioned the relationship between the dollar-to-naira exchange rate and rising egg prices.
“I dey confuse. I sey make I ask. This egg now dem set dollar do go up so egg don cost. The fowl wey lay this egg dey abroad or dey Nigeria? You understand wetin dey bother me. The fowl wey lay this egg, e dey abroad? Make I understand sey na dollar dem take ship the fowl come or the fowl dey Nigeria,” she said in pidgin English.
“So this particular fowl now wey lay this egg, e dey abroad?”
The video, on the other hand, did not sit well with X users, with some venting their rage at the movie actor.
While some users accused Mercy of being “insensitive” to the hardship of Nigerians under the current government, of which her husband, Prince Okojie, is a member, others educated the actress on the cost of materials used to feed the hens, among other things.
Mercy Johnson asking the rationale behind the hike in price of egg because she feels the exchange rate doesn’t affect it cos it’s not imported.
