Desmond Elliot is a Nigerian politician, director, and actor who has acted in over 200 films and television shows. He received Best Supporting Actor in a Drama at the 2nd Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards. He was elected to the Surulere Constituency of the Lagos State House of Assembly in the 11 April 2015 Nigerian General Elections.
Early Life & Education
Desmond Elliot was born on February 4, 1974. His mother is from Illah in Delta State’s Oshimili North, and his father is from Olowogbowo in Lagos Island. He went to Air Force Primary School for primary school and St. John’s College for secondary school, both in Jos. In 2003, he received his bachelor’s degree in economics from Lagos State University.
Career
Desmond Elliot first appeared in soap operas such as Saints and Sinners, One Too Many, and Everyday People. He’s appeared in almost 200 films, including Men Who Cheat, Yahoo Millionaire, and Atlanta. He is a well-known Nollywood actor. In 2006, he was nominated for an African Movie Academy Award for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” for his role in the film “Behind Closed Doors.” Elliot co-produced and co-directed the 2008 film “Reloaded,” which received three African Movie Academy Award nominations in 2009. In 2009 and 2010, he was nominated for Best Actor at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards.
Elliot ran for the post of ambassador for the Face of Hope Project in 2010, and if he wins, he will endeavor to reduce child illiteracy in Nigeria and throughout Africa. The Face of Hope Project is a non-profit, non-religious, and non-political organization founded by volunteers to give hope to the despairing. For the film “Finding Mercy,” he was nominated for “Best Actor in a Supporting Role” at the African Movie Academy Awards in 2014.
Politics
Elliott declared his intention to represent the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Lagos State House of Assembly in September 2014. He ran for and won the Surulere Constituency in Nigeria’s general elections on April 11, 2015. Desmond Elliot is seeking re-election to a third term as a state legislator for Surulere Constituency 1. Despite the fact that he was nominated by the party without opposition during his two terms in office, he will face stiff competition in the general elections of 2023, as a number of candidates, including Honourable Barakat Bakare Akande, the current Council leader of Surulere Local Government, have won the APC ticket for the third term.
Controversy
Desmond came under fire at the End SARS nationwide rally in October 2020 for allegedly supporting Nigeria’s Anti-Social Media Bill, which he had previously disputed when the issue first surfaced on social media. He was seen aggressively denouncing social media influencers and users in a widely shared viral video, saying that if the Nigerian government does not act, social media will collapse the government entirely. Nigerians on social media were not amused by his words, and the phrase “It’s Desmond Elliot’s fault” (na Desmond Elliot cause am) became popular. However, he publicly apologized a few days later.
Personal Life
Desmond Elliot has a wife and four children. The name of his wife is Victoria Elliot, while the names of his children are Denzel Elliot, Desmond Elliot Junior, Donald Elliot, and Dawn Elliot.
