The global oil refining landscape is dominated by megaprojects that process massive amounts of crude oil on a daily basis. These refineries are critical in converting crude oil into crucial products such as gasoline, diesel, and petrochemicals. Among these titans, a newcomer from Africa has made an impression.
The Dangote Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria, is not only Africa’s largest refinery, but also one of the world’s largest refineries.
1. Jamnagar Refinery
Reliance Industries in India owns the Jamnagar Refinery, which is the world’s largest refinery. It has a capacity of 1,240,000 barrels per day and processes over 216 different crude oil grades.
2. Paraguana Refinery Complex
In Venezuela, the Paraguana Refinery Complex is the second largest, generating 940,000 barrels per day. This refinery is critical to Venezuela’s oil production, accounting for 71% of its output.
3. Ulsan Refinery
South Korea’s Ulsan Refinery, owned by SK Energy, is ranked third in the world. With a capacity of 850,000 barrels per day, it produces a wide range of goods, including diesel and jet fuel.
4. Ruwais Refinery
The Ruwais Refinery in the United Arab Emirates is the fourth largest refinery in the Middle East. It processes 837,000 barrels of oil each day.
5. Yeosu Refinery
The Yeosu Refinery in South Korea, operated by GS Caltex Corporation, is the sixth largest, producing 800,000 barrels of oil per day.
6. Onsan Refinery
S-Oil Corporation Inc. operates another South Korean refinery, the Onsan Refinery, which processes 669,000 barrels of crude per day.
7. Dangote Refinery
The Dangote Refinery, Nigeria’s pride, has a daily capacity of 650,000 barrels. It is not only the largest in Africa, but also the ninth largest on the planet.
8. Port Arthur Refinery
The Port Arthur Refinery in Texas, USA is the ninth largest, with a daily capacity of 640,000 barrels.
9. Galveston Bay Refinery
Marathon Petroleum operates the Galveston Bay Refinery, Texas’ seventh largest, with a capacity of 631,000 barrels per day.
10. Beaumont Refinery
Rounding off the top ten is Exxon Mobil’s Beaumont Refinery in Texas, which can process 630,000 barrels per day.
