Onome Ebi (born May 8, 1983) is a Nigerian professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for FC Minsk of the Belarusian Premier League and the Super Falcons of Nigeria. She has competed in five FIFA World Cup tournaments, making her the first African footballer to do so in 2019.

Early Life

Onome Ebi was born on the 8th of May, 1983, in Lagos, which falls among the states in the South Western region of Nigeria.

Career

Professional Career

Onome Ebi began her career with Bayelsa Queens FC in the Nigerian Women’s Championship before moving on to Pite IF and Djurgrdens IF in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan.

She later played in the Turkish First League for Düvenciler Lisesispor and Ataşehir Belediyespor. In August 2012, she made her Champions League debut for Ataşehir Belediyespor.

Ebi returned to Sunnan SK in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan in 2013, before moving to Belarus to play for FC Minsk in the Belarusian Premier League. During her tenure, she was a member of the team that won the Belarusian Women’s Super Cup, the Belarusian Women’s Cup, and the Belarusian Premier League twice.

Ebi usually gets to wear the team’s number five shirt during both club and international matches because it means so much to her. When she arrived in Minsk, the jersey number was already taken, so she requested the number 55 instead. In 2018, she signed with Henan Jianye of China’s second division.

International Career

Ebi is a member of Nigeria’s national team. On July 6, 2019, she became the first African footballer to compete in five FIFA World Cup Tournaments, having competed in the FIFA Women’s World Cups in 2003, 2007, 2011, and 2015, as well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Ebi competed in the African Women’s Championship with the Nigerian team in 2008, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2018. Nigeria won the competition four times in 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
